Entry requirements
General requirements for undergraduate courses

The University of Manchester runs its own foundation programmes for students who wish to study in the areas of Engineering or Science.
For further information on the options available for foundation study, visit:
Foundation year

Three GCE A Levels or International Baccalaureate.
ND (Upper Credit)
HND (Upper Credit)
One or more years of study at a Nigerian University may be considered for a transfer onto year one or two of an undergraduate degree
Although formal undergraduate applications must come through UCAS, we are happy to consider your qualifications informally to indicate the likely chances of gaining admission.
General requirements for postgraduate/research courses
Postgraduate taught programmes
Applicants for a Masters degree will generally require a Bachelors Degree from a recognised institution with a minimum class of 2:1 and a minimum GPA of 3.5/5.0.
For some courses, a good 2:2 Bachelors degree may be acceptable.
Postgraduate research
A Masters degree from a good university will allow access to an MPhil course for those wishing to proceed to PhD.
Postgraduate research degrees are individually supervised, and we strongly recommend that prospective applicants make initial enquiries with the potential supervisor or school before submitting a formal application.
A research proposal is required along with your formal application.
English language requirements
English Language requirements vary by course and department but are usually the equivalent of IELTS 6.0 – 7.5 or 5.5 IELTS for the International Foundation Year.
In some cases a good English grade at SSCE level may be accepted but this varies according to the course for which you apply.
IELTS testing is available at the British Council office in Lagos at a cost of 22,500 Naira (fees correct as of 06.08.07). Details are available from:
The British Council
Some departments ask that the appropriate score has been met before you apply for a course whilst other departments give conditional offers subject to applicants achieving our general entry requirement level of English Language proficiency before starting the course.
The University will, in general, not ask for English Language scores for students who have studied a first degree in English. However, this is at the discretion of the individual academic school.
Other entry requirements
Please note that this is generic information only. Faculties and Schools have different entry requirements and some qualifications may not be acceptable for certain courses, so it is important to check with the School directly before you apply.
Some courses have additional entry requirements such as previous work experience, submission of written work with the application or previous study of a particular subject.
