UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN POSTGRADUATE CONFERENCE TRAVEL GRANTS
The intention of these awards is to provide opportunities for young researchers who will contribute to future research. Travel grants are available to successful applicants and must be used towards the cost of travel, conference registration and subsistence. In principal, support for Masters students is for local travel. However, a Masters student who is allocated a travel grant may use the full value of the grant towards the cost of international travel. Eligibility:
Masters students in the SECOND year of study. Doctoral students in the SECOND & THIRD YEARS of study. Doctoral students who successfully apply in the 3rd year of study may use their grants in the 4th year of study on condition that they are registered at the time of the conference. *Students who have UPGRADED from Masters to Doctoral study are eligible in the FIRST year of Doctoral study. Evidence of the Upgrade must be provided. NOTE:
Applications from students registered for the Honours degree, the FIRST year of Masters study and the FIRST year of Doctoral study will not be accepted (excepting for * above). Closing dates for application – There are two rounds of application 9 March (is for Students applying to travel between April and September) and 31 August (is for Students applying to travel between October and March 2012)(The Selection Committee meets in March and September). The UCT Postgraduate Travel Grants are limited to ONE award per student, per degree. (Doctoral students may apply for support towards one local and one international conference). Value: For Masters students – Up to a maximum of R8 000 For Doctoral Students – Up to a maximum of R20,000 Note: The following SADC countries are not deemed “international”, and the local value will apply: Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
TERMS OF REFERENCE AND APPLICATION PROCEDURE
1. Applicants must NOT be full-time members of staff. Applicants who are offered awards must take up the offer whilst registered. Students who are no longer registered at the time of proposed travel will be INELIGIBLE to claim the Grant.
2. Only one Grant per degree may be awarded. Doctoral students may apply for support towards travel to one local and one international conference.
3. Proof must be shown that the paper has been accepted by the Conference Organisers. Please attach documentary proof of acceptance if possible. If acceptance has not been received by the Closing Date, the application may still be sent it and the proof of acceptance sent in later. If a travel grant is offered to a student who has not provided proof of acceptance, payment of the grant will not be made until proof of acceptance is submitted.
4. Applicants must have tried to source funding for travel elsewhere. The Grants are not full-cost and will only be awarded on proof that sufficient funding has been secured. Please attach documentary proof of any application for assistance. 5. A quotation for airfare from a travel agency must be attached to the application form. 6. All applicants must attach to this application form a brief CV (No longer than ONE A4 page).
7. All applicants must attach to this application an abstract of the poster/paper to be presented (No longer than One A4 page), as well as all academic transcripts.
8. No applications will be accepted without the written motivation of the Supervisor and the HOD. Please note that a signature does not constitute motivation. HoDs and Supervisors are required to complete the relevant sections of the applicant form, giving full motivation and support of the applicant’s attendance at the proposed conference. Separate letters of motivation may also be submitted.
9. No applications will be accepted for research visits or for participation in academic programmes at other universities in other countries. Applications for international research visits should be made for the UCT Scholarships for International Travel. 10. Incomplete and/or late applications, or applications from ineligible students WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
11. Retrospective applications will NOT be considered. It is important to note that Conferences that take place BEFORE the closing date will be considered as RETROSPECTIVE.
12. Students who are in the 2nd or 3rd year of Doctoral study and who apply for conferences that will take place in the following year (when the student is in the 3rd year of masters or 1st/4th year of doctoral study) will be deemed ineligible. It is compulsory for successful candidates to submit a brief report on their return with specific details on any publications that may result from the conference. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of the award made and recovery of the funds paid out.
